Accessing Manitoba's Child Abuse Registry

The Province of Manitoba maintains a central listing of individuals who have been alleged or found guilty of abusing a child. The Provincial Child Abuse Registry is available to agencies, organizations, and employers to ensure that persons working in a position of trust with children were not previously known to have been involved in the abuse of a child. While the registry exists to ensure the protection of children, it recognizes the importance of ensuring that persons who may be listed as abusers are guaranteed protection of their rights as well.

Not all provinces and states have child abuse registries. Individuals, agencies or organizations who wish to obtain information on the possible existence and operation of a registry should be in contact with the Ministry or government department responsible for child welfare in that jurisdiction.

The government of Manitoba requires the following steps be taken in order for an organization to be granted access to the Child Abuse Registry.

A. The organization should write to the Child Abuse Registry making a general request for access to the Child Abuse Registry. This letter should include a description of the organization, the organization*s involvement with children and who, within the organization, would have signing authority for the process. This request can be forwarded to Executive Director, Child and Family Support Branch, Suite 201*114 Garry Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4V5.

B. The Child Abuse Registry will review the request to ensure that it complies with the legislative requirements, and if the request is approved, a form will be forwarded to the organization for use each time a Child Abuse Registry check is required.

C. Forms, after completion and signing, are forwarded to the Child Abuse Registry to determine if the individual is listed or not listed on the Child Abuse Registry, and returned by mail to the organization.

D. All inquiries may be directed to the

Child Abuse Registrar,
Child and Family Support Branch,
Suite 201*114 Garry Street,
Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4V5.
